Abstract

In this modern era, human life tends to be more competitive than it used to be because people at the advancement in various are examples in the field of technology. However, the process to be successful is not as easy as people think. Therefore, some people who cannot handle the obstacles or fail to succeed could be stressed and depressed. Some people usually express their mottos during important events in life. For Widya Kartika University students in Surabaya, Indonesia, one of the important events is the commencement day. During the commencement procession in 2015, there are 138 graduates explicitly wrote their mottos; the mottos were written on graduation books. However, the graduates do not know what form of the mottos which can support and inspire them. Therefore, this research aims to find out what kinds of sentence types and figurative language used in the mottos. This research uses case study design by Creswell (2012: p. 465), especially the intrinsic case study design. The source data of this research were taken from the graduates’ book of Widya Kartika University in 2015. The data of this thesis will be limited on 66 mottos of the graduates. The results show that there are two kinds of sentence types used in the mottos of Widya Kartika University Graduates in 2015: declarative sentence or known as statement sentence and imperative sentence or known as command sentence. The results also show that there are nine types of figurative language used in the mottos of Widya Kartika University Graduates in 2015: asyndeton, antithesis, apostrophe, hyperbole, simile, anaphora, asyndeton, chiasmus, and ellipsis.
