Abstract
This is a research on portrayal of a real person depicted in a fictional character in a novel. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created his main character, Sherlock Holmes, a consulting detective, inspired from his lecturer, Dr. Joseph Bell and wrote in the first novel of Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet. Conan Doyle met Dr. Joseph Bell when he was a medical student in University of Edinburgh. He learnt about Dr. Joseph Bell’s methods, especially deduction method, the method in deducing something, and became his clerk. The objectives of this thesis are to analyze the portrayal of Dr. Joseph Bell in Sherlock Holmes and the differences between them. In carrying out this research, the writer used qualitative method and the following steps: reading, data collecting, data classifying, and analyzing. In analyzing the problems, character and characterization theory of intrinsic approach and biographical and autobiographical theory of extrinsic approach are employed. Character and characterization can be analyzed by dialogues, actions, setting of the place and time, and point of view. In biographical theory, the readers of biographies theorize how the author’s life and makes conclusions based on the events of the text. In autobiography theory, the autobiography is like a metamorphosis of the author because the author tells about his or her life in his or her autobiography from the beginning of his or her life until the time of writing the autobiography. The research leads to a conclusion that Sherlock Holmes is truly a portrayal of Dr. Joseph Bell although there are some differences between them.
