Nowadays, some people are ambitious to get their goals, but because of the problems and difficulty to reach the highest success they lost their way in the middle of life journey. Inability to accept the fact and circumstances makes some people feel stessed and eventually become depressed. Depression is one of the main causes of committing suicide. The phenomenon of depression and suicide occur because self-awareness and human existence begin to decline and fade. Relating to human existence, this thesis analyzed how human existence reflected in the literary work, entitled The Old Man ond the Sea. The writer analyzes the character of Santiago through the philosophical approach according to Russell and Cohen. The writer also used existentialism theory proposed by Karl Jaspers written by Kurt Satamun to reflect the human existence in the novel. The conclusion of this thesis is human existence reflected through Jasper's concept, which includes the concept of the meaning of life and the concept of self realization ofpotentialities. Santiago's attitude as a main character speaks to the universal truth of a man's existence within this world, where pride, respect, tenacity, and dreams fuel a man in his quest to thrive in the face of struggle. Wholly, the main characar becomes the representation of human existence.
