Abstract

Culture and history have a strong bond and complete each other. Culture and history have a very broad scope dealing with social issues which happened in a certain period. One of the social issues is women issues that become the focus of this thesis. Women issues which settled in America are vary in aspects. Therefore, the portrayal of women issues in America are only limited during nineteenth to twentieth century. The women issues that will be analyzed also limited only in the Robert Grant‘s Unleavened Bread. Thus, the objectives of this study are finding women issues in America during nineteenth to twentieth century and describing Robert Grant‘s view of women issues as it is presented in the novel along with the historical context during nineteenth to twentieth century. The research design applied in this study is qualitative content analysis. It is applied for fact finding process between the existing phenomena happened in America and the phenomena presented in the novel. In conclusion, the view of Robert Grant in seeing those three major categories of women issues was influenced by his biography and the portrayal of his age.
