Abstract

This research entitled Child Abuse Represented in Matilda (1996) aims to reveal the abuse experienced by the children characters. This research uses Qualitative- Interpretive method and employs classification of child abuse from Clark (2007) as well as film style from Kuhn & Westwell (2020) which also supported by Body Gesture theory from Ekman and Friesen (2016). The findings show that the children characters experienced several types of abuse. These indications of abusive acts are established through the narration, dialogues, and acts, which are also supported by the cinematic aspects such as mise-en-scene, shots, angles, and sound. This research further addresses and analyse the abuse experienced by all the children characters revealed in the previous study done by Mahmuda (2018) when analysing the identities of the main character, Matilda. The result of this research shows that the children characters experienced three types of abuse based on Clarck’s (2007) classification: neglect, physical abuse, and emotional abuse.
