Abstract

Taboo language, also known as ‘free speech’, is one way of people expressing their disapproval of certain kinds of behaviour believed to be harmful, either for supernatural reasons or violation of Taboo Words (Wardhaugh 2006). There are many harsh words in this research which will be examined to find out what types and functions are contained in posts by the famous artist Cardi B. This descriptive study employs a qualitative methodology. Because it results in facts and phenomena that are simple to explain and allows for the development of new hypotheses that are consistent with the model. The researcher looks up context-relevant words relating to societal issues and analyzes the type and functions of prohibited words used in Cardi B's posts. Using Wardaugh (1986) and Jay’s (1996), the researcher has access to about 20 Taboo words that can be combined and interpreted to have a variety of type and functions. The types found by researchers were sex, body parts, racism, and LGBT, while for functions the categories Vulgar language, Obscenity, Sexual harassment, and name-calling and insult the researcher found from Cardi B twitter posts.
