Abstract

Debate is a common practice in the field of politics and legal. In debating, the key lies in whether the speaker can influence the audience. The same goes for the presidential debate in 2020 between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. This study analyzes the interpersonal markers used by Donald Trump and Joe Biden in their debate and explains the function of interpersonal markers. The writer used the interpersonal discourse markers theory by Maschler (2009) to analyze the interpersonal markers and the function of the interpersonal markers. This research used qualitative research methods to analyze interpersonal discourse markers and the types of markers used in debates. This study found the interpersonal markers used by Donald Trump and Joe Biden as well as each of their functions that include: managing the flow of conversation, showing attitude, and to share more knowledge.
