Abstract

The problem of English pronunciation happens to the college students who come from Mentawai. They study at Widya Kartika University, catholic Widya Mandala University and PGRI Adi Buana University. The influences of Mentawai dialect has become the problem to Mentawai students when they communicate to each other using English language. This study focused on English consonants and vowels sounds that difficult to pronounce by Mentawai students of English department in mastering English pronunciation since ESL learners of Indonesia come from different cultures, a student must have different mother tongue from others. The difference sound system of mother tongue brings difficulty in mastering English pronunciation. This research uses case study design by Creswell (2012) especially case study design. The source data of this research is taken from mispronunciations of English vowels and consonants sound by Mentawai students. The result showed that there are six English consonants and four English vowels sound which are difficult to be pronounced by Mentawai students, then from their difficulties it could be concluded that it is true that Mentawai dialect has influence in production English sounds.
