Abstract

This paper, based upon typological theories on part of speech, makes a research and analysis the syntactic features of Indonesian adjectives as predicates. Syntactically, Indonesian adjectives can directly act as predicates. They can appear in polished form, and can also be accompanied by body marks or use appropriate affixes, reduplication forms, etc. However, Indonesian adjectives have a weak ability to directly carry objects, and preposition are generally required to connect. When Indonesian adjectives serve as predicates and appear alone, they generally do not have the meaning of comparison. They need to be in a larger text structure to imply the meaning of difference. This research results show that Indonesian adjectives behaves much closer to intransitive verbs so that it tends to function directly as sentence predicate. This research identifies the linguistic property of adjectival class in Indonesia. It has compensated for some weakness in previous studies by considering the part of speech system of a language as an organic mechanism in which different part of speech interact with each other.
