Abstract

This study explores how social identity transformation is depicted in the novel Where the Crawdads Sing and its film adaptation and examines the impact of ecranization on portraying this transformation in the film version. This study uses an ecranization analysis to compare and contrast the portrayal across mediums. It also examines the issue of social identity transformation in Olivia Newman's film adaptation of Delia Owens' novel Where the Crawdads Sing and the novel. The study looks at Kya Clark, the main character, whose path from rejection to acceptance reveals essential changes in her social identity. Through an analysis of the narrative strategies, character arcs, and thematic components in the novel and the film, this study reveals how the media handles the intricacies of social identity alteration. The results show that whereas the novel offers a more in-depth understanding of Kya's social identity transformation, the film emphasizes visual narrative to portray her transformation, providing different but complimentary viewpoints on her path. This comparative analysis adds to the larger conversation on how social identities are portrayed in modern narrative and literary adaptation. In conclusion, multiple representations of Kya's shifting social identity are used in the book and film Where the Crawdads Sing to illustrate social identity transformation. However, cutting the narrative and reducing the depth of exploration of internal characters by modifying, reducing, and adding the story in the film might alter how societal revolution is portrayed by slashing the narrative and decreasing the depth of investigation of interior characters.
