Abstract

The writen language is a litle bit different from that of spoken language. It means that in order to understand the written language, it must be grammatically correct and words are arranged in a such way. So, they can be easily understoodby their readers. It will not be interesting or challenging to put simple sentences and they are followed by full stops then it is followed by another simple sentence. The text or article will be easily read and it can make the readers understand the contents if the sentences are connected with one to another by using cohesive ties or cohesive devices. The function of these ties is to make the ideas run smoothly and they have logical ties. Therefore, this study focuses on analyzing the use of cohesive devices in the article fromThe Jakarta Post Newspaper and what types of cohesive devices are frequently found in the articles obtained. Then, in order to answer the problem statements formulated, the qualitative and quantitative research design was employed. These methods were used to describe the existing data obtained from the articles ofNew Dawn for RI – Oz Relations. Theresults of this study show that the writer of the Jakarta Post articles applied some cohesive devices or cohesive ties in their article. The use of these cohesive devices are aimed to achieve the coherence of The Jakarta Post articles so that the articles are easily understood by their readers. The cohesive ties used in these articles among others are reference, substitution, conjunction and collocation.
