Abstract
In communication, language is one of important aspects. People need language to communicate and interact with each other to fill up what they need. People can share some information by communicating in spoken or written form. However, sometimes the single word which is used to form a phrase or sentence can lead the readers or the listeners to have more than one interpretation about the information. The different interpretation can be found in term the meaning of word itself or when the words are formed in a phrase or sentence. This situation is called ambiguity. Based on that above description, the problem formulated in this study are: (1) What are the interpretations of the ambiguous which are found in the headline news of The Jakarta Post. (2) What are the causes of ambiguity which are found in the headline news of The Jakarta Post. In order to analyze the problems, this study used descriptive qualitative design to describe the obtained data. The result show that there are 14 cases of lexical ambiguity which are caused by polysemy, and 12 cases of grammatical ambiguity which are caused by equivocal phrasing which are found in the headline news of The Jakarta Post published on the first week of May, 2016.
