Abstract

Language has several functions. One of them is to entertain the audiences through the expressions containing something that is funny. The way how to make people laught is determined by the humorous utterances. Therefore, the audience or the readers need to understand well what the humorous or funny stories want to be shared. People will laugh at the humorous utterances if they have schemata or knowledge of the world. Without having this schemata, people do not laugh because the funny utterances will bring no effects toward the readers. Thereforr, the funny stories can share the understanding depends on how the implied humorous utterances can be revealed successfully. Based on the background of this study the problems formulated are (1) How do the humorous utterances impliedly mean? And What types of humour do the humorous utterances belong to? From the two formulated problems mentioned above, the objectives of this study are (1) to describe why the utterances impliedly stated contain something that is funny and (2) to determine what types of humour each funny utterance belongs to. The reserach method applied in this study is qualitative research more specifically it belongs to content analysis. This design is taken with the consideration that the writer analyzes the content of utterances containing something funny. In addition, the qualitative design is made use of because in this study the writer describes the existing data related to funny utterances.
