Abstract

The Bluest Eye is one of Toni Morrison’s novels that describes the situation and condition of the African-American society in 1940s. The novel tells about Pecola’s life who becomes the victim of racism. The aims of the thesis are: describing how the domination of racism form, the causes of racism, and the effect of racism which is experienced by Pecola. The writer uses library research to acquire data and information that have much connection with the subject matter of this thesis, hegemony theory by Gramsci which is the whites dominate blacks and blacks dominate blacks, and racism theory by Rattansi applies to answer the cause and the effect of racism. The results of the research find out that: (1) The domination forms of whites to blacks and blacks to blacks; (2) The causes of racism as the influence of culture; environment, and the presence of stereotype. (3) The effects of racism are lack of understanding, ignorance, mistaken beliefs and hurt, jealousy which is making blacks feel depressed, despair, frustrated, angry and afraid.
