Abstract

This thesis observes and analyzes altruism in Charles Dickens` Great Expectation. Altruism is a helping behavior with internal motive which gives benefit only for other people and needs a sacrifice from the side of helper. The writer chooses Joe Gargery as the character to be analyzed because he is one of the major character, a figure described as good natured, sweet-tempered and dear fellow. Therefore, the scope of the study is limited to Joe Gargery`s helping behavior. The purpose of this study is to figure out Joe`s helping behaviors, his motives, and his sacrifices. By answering the questions, it will be able to know whether Joe performs altruism or not. In analyzing, the writer uses library approach and the method of qualitative. The related literature used is social psychology theory on altruism. In analysis, the writer manages to figure out that Joe helps other people with internal motives and makes sacrifices. This analysis results in a conclusion that Joe performs altruism. Hence, Joe is an altruist. Altruism does exist in Charles Dickens` Great Expectation.
