Abstract
This study is concerned with women’s gossip used by female characters in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The writer formulates the problems in this study, they are as in following: first is what kind of women’s gossip are used by female characters in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, second is what kinds of topics are chosen by female characters in their gossiping in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and the last is how do female characters do their gossip in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The writer applies a qualitative research design to analyze the kinds of women’s gossip in the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, because her data are in the form of words. After analyzing twenty fragments there are four kinds of gossip are used by female characters. Those are chit – chat, person’s character, ugly gossip, and slander. Then, there are four kinds of topics of gossip chosen by female characters, they are house talk, scandal, bitching, and chatting. Next, the ways of how female characters are gossiping are creating connection, expressing thinking and feeling and communicating with detail. The writer concludes that female characters often use chit – chat in gossiping, because they like to share good information, and advice. They use chatting as a topic of gossip. The last, female characters use all way of gossiping in their gossip in order to create good relationship among each other.
