Abstract

In our daily life, people are not only having faith in God but also having faith in myth. One of the examples of myth in this modern era is zodiac. Zodiac can be found in a magazine, radios and in television programs. A lot of people are still believes in myth although what is state in myth, for example in zodiac, will not always coming true. The same condition also found in literary work. Macbeth by William Shakespeare is discusses the same condition like the phenomenon above. Shakespeare’s Macbeth portrays the influence of myth through the main character’s psychology and behavior. Therefore, the aims of this study are to know what myth is portrayed in Shakespeare’s Macbeth and its effects to the main character psychology and behavior. The approaches used in this research are psychological approach and mythological approach. This research concludes two results as the conclusion of this research. First, the type of myth in Shakespeare’s Macbeth is foretelling which means that something that influences his mind to follow the myth. Second, the effect of myth is causing the main character to have a strong ambition to the power. Therefore in order to fulfill his ambition, he killed, and thus felt guilty, haunted, and fearful because of what he had done.
