Abstract

Every year people celebrate International Women’s Day. Unfortunately, not all of women in the world really enjoy that day. One of the causes why they cannot really enjoy that day is; they are still haunted by sexual crimes. Of course being a victim of sexual crimes brings effects and struggle to survive from the effects. Those conditions happened in Maya Angelou’s life in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. However, she could handle the effects very well. So, through her true story, this research’s purposes are to identify Maya’s psychological condition effects of being a sexual crime’s victim and how she survived from the effects. This research used Psychoanalysis approach which sees the main character’s conflict. Then, the first result of this research shows that the effects of being a sexual crime’s victim through Maya’s psychological condition are; having problems in physic, safety, and self-esteem needs, being discarded by people and could not develop her potentials. The second result shows that Maya’s survival from the effects starts from; she fulfilled the physic, safety, and self-esteem needs, and developed her potentials.
