Abstract

This research analyzes two statements of the problems. The first one is the analysis of the similarities between America in the late of 20th century and America in the beginning of 21st century. The second one is the analysis the concept of peace in three Martin Luther King’s speeches. Traditional historicist theory is applied to answer the first statement of the problem. The theory is fit to see the similarities as it concerns to certain events which caused new events. By seeing series of events in the late of 20th century and in the beginning of the 21st century, similarities can be found. The second one is the analysis about the concept of peace in three Martin Luther King’s speeches. This research applies hermeneutics in order to understand the peace concept. Hermeneutics concerns in seeing the unity of Martin Luther King and also other texts that are written him. Since there are some confusing sentences which cannot be understood only by reading the speeches, related events and information are found to make clear the sentences. After the confusing sentences are cleared, close reading can be conducted in order to find the concept of peace in the three speeches. Finally, the Martin Luther King’s peace concept can be understood from the peace concept in the three speeches.
