Abstract
This study was mainly intended to analyze verbal and non-verbal profanity used by the main characters in Deadpool 2 Movie. The objectives of the study are to find out the types of verbal and non-verbal profanity used in Deadpool 2 movie and to find out the social context and the meaning of verbal and non-verbal profanity that are used by the main characters in the movie. This study uses descriptive qualitative approach. It is categorized as sociolinguistic because this study focuses on social context of social factors in utterances. The data are collected from the utterances and the non-verbal that followed the utterances of the main characters, Deadpool, Domino, Cable, Firefist, and Weasel. The researcher uses Bergen’s theory to identify the types of profanity and Holmes’s theory to analyze the social context as well as the meaning of the profane words. The result of this study shows there are18 variations of profane words found in the movie, divided into four types according to Bergen’s four principles: holy, fucking, shit, and nigger principle. The writer also found social meaning of each profanity by analyzing it according to social factors theory.
