Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the swear words uttered by the characters in Suicide Squad movie based on Ljung (2011) themes and analyze the pragmatic function of using the words. A qualitative approach is employed in this study since the data are the utterances of the characters in the movie. The data collection procedure and data analyze steps are first, the researcher looks for any information related to swear words. After the collected information is sufficient, the movie is rented from YouTube movie. The data analysis steps involve data reduction, data displaying, and finally drawing conclusion. Results show that scatological theme is the most frequently used swear words, followed by religious theme, animal theme, mother/family related theme, sex organ, and the last two themes viz. sexual activity and prostitution hold the same last place with only 1 datum. As for the function, replacive swearing is the most used function of swear words utterances, followed by name-calling, and then expletive interjection and emphasis with the same amount of data. Next is anaphoric use of epithet, followed with adjectives of dislike, and the last are unfriendly suggestion as well as adverbial/adjectival intensifiers with same occurrence frequency. The results indicate that swear words are used frequently in the Suicide Squad movie. This study implicates a rich theoretical and empirical framework for future research especially in swear words.
