Abstract

This study looks at the roles and statuses of female characters in the 2024 live- action series Avatar the Last Airbender, with a particular emphasis on Katara and Suki. Using Judith Butler's gender performativity theory, the study investigates how gender is actively produced and performed via repeated acts and societal expectations. Katara, the waterbender, is portrayed as both nurturing and powerful, challenging the binary notion of feminine softness and masculine strength. Meanwhile, Suki, a non-bender female warrior, demonstrates leadership and combat skills, emphasising female agency in addition to supernatural power. The findings show that the series reflects shifting cultural narratives about femininity, demonstrating that strength, leadership, and emotional depth are not limited to male characters. These portrayals add to the larger conversation about gender representation in media, demonstrating how fictional narratives can influence and reflect societal perceptions of women's roles and status.
