Abstract
This thesis aims to analyze the functions of personal idioms used by the protagonists in The House movie. Idioms are commonly used when people are talking to each other, such as to friends, family, or loved ones. Profanities and pet names can be functioned as idioms. However, each of them can be functioned differently as seen in this movie that there were 72 words found which positioned to be idioms but in different functions. Therefore, the main objectives of this thesis were (i) to find out the functions of personal idioms used by the protagonists in The House movie (ii) to find out the mostly used functions of personal idioms in the movie. This thesis applied narrative approach design to analyze the movie. It is found that there were seven functions of personal idioms used by the protagonists, such as, confrontations, expression of affection, labels for outsiders, nicknames, requests, sexual references, and teasing insults. From those seven functions, nicknames function was the mostly used function in the movie.
