Abstract
In Indonesia, one of the requirements to graduate college is to write a thesis abstract in two languages, which are Bahasa Indonesia and English. Some students who do not have enough knowledge about English would have a hard time in writing English abstract. Some of the students decided to use Google Translate, a machine translation, to help them in making an abstract. Unfortunately, there are still many errors on the thesis abstract. In order to reduce the Google Translate usage for academic purposes, this study analyzed the translation errors based on Kim’s theory of meaningassessment criteria. She classifies errors into major and minor. The data were collected from Widya Kartika University with a total 18 theses. The researcher found there were 65 errors (66%) including major and minor errors. 43 errors were major errors that consist of experiential, logical, interpersonal, and textual and 22 errors were minor errors (34%) that consist of punctuation, capitalization, and minor grammar. The result of this study shows that Google Translate is not suitable to be used for academic purpose such as writing a thesis abstract since the mostly found errors were major errors.
