Abstract

This thesis is using qualitative descriptive analysis of Multatuli Max Havelaar. This current study is intended to bring spirit of nationalism and invite youth generation to write motivational book. Therefore, the nationalism is presented in the story and narrating style used by the author to present nationalism are chosen because nationalism in Indonesia have different meaning from the spirit of unity. In order, this current examined how nationalism is presented and narrative style used by the author to present nationalism used reader response approach and narrative style theory. This current study also used nationalism theory and semiotic theory. The results of this study are (1) Max Havelaar presents nationalism through symbol and event; (2) The narrating style used by the author to present nationalism is through the monologue method using narrator (as first person and third person). This novel used narrator created expression to build relation between the reader and the novel.
