Abstract

This study analyzes how effective communication can be carried out in the workplace to ensure that implied meanings are well understood and misunderstandings are minimized. This aim of this study is to identify the types of non-observance maxims, how the non-observance of maxims occurs, and the types of conversational implicature in the dialogues of the main characters in the Upgraded movie which is set in a workplace context. The analysis of conversational implicature is based on Grice’s theory, while the classification of maxim non- observance refers to Thomas’s theory. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method to provide a detailed analysis of the data. The data were collected by watching and transcribing utterances that potentially contain conversational implicatures. Additionally, triangulation analysis was applied to ensure the accuracy of the data. The researcher found that conversational implicature occurs when the utterances of the characters involve non-observance of maxims, including 13 occurs of flouting the maxims of quality, 2 occurs of quantity, 4 occurs of relevance, 2 occurs of manner, and 5 occurs of violating the maxim of quality. Moreover, the researcher also found the presence 18 of particularized conversational implicature and 8 of generalized conversational implicature.
